It may subsequently be revoked.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1779720108813{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]<strong>Continue to work after age 65?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the context of labour shortages, governments have introduced or improved a number of measures to encourage seniors to continue working and to allow them to stay active or to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working income exemptions for the calculation of the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seniors who turn 65 years old of age and would like to continue working part-time often hesitate to do so because they fear losing their Guaranteed income supplement, often called the \u2033big pension\u2033.<\/p>\n<p>First, let us remind you that, starting at age 65, people are generally entitled to receive the Old Age Security (OAS) ($ 8,971 in 2025).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, individuals with low income can also receive a second pension, the GIS, to a maximum annual amount of $13,043.<\/p>\n<p>($15,702 for a couple). However, the GIS is quickly reduced based on other income earned at a rate of 50% (25% for a couple) for every dollar of additional income (ex: working income, QPP pension, investment income).[\/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=&#8221;&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;]To encourage seniors to continue working past the age of 65 and be less penalized, the federal government allows them to earn $5,000 of working income without affecting their GIS and a 50% exemption for working income from $5,000 to $10,000.[\/vc_cta][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1743470970278{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]It is to be noted that the OAS income do not reduce the GIS.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7750&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1743471003807{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;](1) The following incomes are excluded in the reduction calculation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>OAS<\/li>\n<li>Working income<\/li>\n<li>First $5,000<\/li>\n<li>50% between $5,000 to $10,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tax credit for career extension (age 60 and more)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its economic update, the Quebec\u2019s government announced changes to the career extension credit. The main one will exclude workers aged 60 to 64.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the credit will be reduced on the basis of <strong>net income<\/strong> (work income, pension income, investment income, etc.) rather than <strong>work income<\/strong> alone.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9278&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text margin_bottom=&#8221;0&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1779720207036{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]<strong>Work Premiums<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To increase income of low-income workers a \u201cbonus\u201d system payable along with the tax returns was introduced by both levels of government a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A single person earning between $ 2,400 and $ 12,620 will be eligible for a bonus of nearly 50% of salary up to a maximum of $ 4,998. For a couple without children, the 50% bonus applies to salaries in the range of $ 3,600 to $ 19,534 up to a maximum of $ 7,791. The bonus is gradually reduced when net income exceeds the previous maximum.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9281&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_cta h2=&#8221;&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;]In conclusion, it may be very interesting for a retired person who otherwise has little income to earn a salary in the range from $3,000 to $15,000 when considering this previous incentives.
